The first video game, ‘Tennis for Two’ is believed to have been created in 1958. Since then, the industry has changed from basic games played by a few to hosting multi-million-dollar events for the best in the world to compete against each other. All of this is due to the rapid technological development it has experienced.

The constantly evolving and expanding landscape is due to significant improvements in software and hardware by committed humans. But where can we expect the next big development to occur?

Etch These Three Areas in Gaming Technology into Your Head

Each of them focuses on a specific category that can take gaming technology to the next level

Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR)

In 2016, Pokémon Go was the most popular game of the year. The neat use of AR to map live locations within the game drew users from across the world. VR, on the other hand, immerses users into the game by using headsets.

Both have advanced gaming into a new dimension, and the future looks promising as there have been massive developments through upgraded hardware and a larger game pool. However, it is expected that, apart from games, these will serve more as a social interaction platform. So, along with running away from zombies, hosting virtual meetings and parties in high definition could be the future they have in store.

Ray Tracing for Improved Lighting

The Ray Tracing Algorithm is one that matches real life light pathways and their interactions with objects to emulate them in 3D. This method is slowly becoming popular as it tracks the light’s path to determine where to place shade and shadow, giving a final image of hyper-realistic games. It is expected that this algorithm will be incorporated into most games.

Cloud Gaming

Setting up your gaming system or purchasing a console is out of reach for many gamers who wish to indulge in their hobbies. Cloud gaming has challenged this notion and made games more accessible to those without the means to purchase costly hardware.

This allows games to reach a wider audience base while still maintaining smooth gameplay across tablets, televisions, and smartphones. Although it is still dependent on players having reliable and secure network access in their location, which is the only factor that can hamper its integration into gaming.

Conclusion: A Bright Future for Gaming

The three domains and their rapid evolution represent the optimistic future gamers and developers have for the industry they love. Each plays a role in creating a future in which gaming is more realistic and immersive, affordable and accessible, and connects people across the globe.
