Linking two public clouds once meant renting colocation space, ordering cables, and configuring routing by hand. During 2026, the largest providers turned that chore into a console setting. This blog traces how cloud networking between competitors evolved, what managed interconnects change, and what still stays with your team.

How Did Companies Link Rival Clouds Before 2026?

Organizations chose among three imperfect routes:

  • Encrypted tunnels across the public internet, inexpensive but unreliable under heavy traffic
  • Colocation cross-connects, requiring weeks of provisioning and specialized routing skills
  • Third-party exchange fabrics, adding another vendor and invoice

Every gigabyte leaving a provider’s network was also billed as egress.

How Did Cloud Networking Become a Managed Service?

Rivals finally cooperated, starting when Google introduced Cross-Cloud Interconnect in 2023. AWS previewed Interconnect multicloud at re:Invent 2025 alongside an open specification any provider can adopt. Google Cloud reached general availability in April 2026, Oracle followed in July, and Microsoft Azure entered public preview on August 31. Each connection is built on four independent paths, with encryption between edge routers.

What Changes When the Meter Stops Counting Gigabytes?

AWS now charges an hourly fee based on reserved bandwidth, with no per-gigabyte transfer charges, while the partner cloud bills its own side. In AWS’s example, a 10-gigabit link at the lowest tier costs $12.33 an hour, roughly $9,000 monthly. Architects once asked how much data they could afford to move, but now they ask how much capacity to reserve, which makes idle bandwidth the new waste.

Why Is IP Address Planning the New Bottleneck?

Physical connectivity is no longer the difficult part of cloud networking. Many cloud environments were designed independently, often with identical private address ranges. Overlapping ranges cannot route to each other without translation, so AWS advises customers to check allocations for conflicts first. A clean addressing plan now determines how quickly private cloud-to-cloud connectivity goes live.

Is Your Network Ready for On-Demand Multicloud Links?

Within three years, cloud networking between rival providers has shifted from cables and contracts to on-demand provisioning. Flat-rate pricing rewards steady, high-volume flows, and the remaining effort sits in address planning. Audit your IP ranges across every cloud this quarter, list workloads a flat-rate link would serve, and test a free starter interconnect before committing budget.
